BeoWulf design : work samples
Current work...
ABI 2001 Web site
My most recent work has been with Advanced Biometrics. Two new new web sites and a complete redesign, combined with regular updates. One of the unique challanges was creating content around a young company that needed more traffic. Part of the solution was to move to a site design that included more text on the home page as a means of driving higher traffice from search engines. Sometimes the best design is the one that draws the most traffic rather than the most flash.
Samples of past projects...
imandi.com
I spent all of 2000 working at imandi.com. When I arrived, the site and code was in extremely poor shape. All prior work had been outsourced and had been created using Visual InterDev. Over the course of the next three months; in between projects, every single line of code was rewritten. I worked with a team of C++ developers to construct a dynamic site that allowed us to serve 9 co-brands and over 10,000 pages. I was promoted to HTML Team Lead and handled the day to day project management for a team of four HTML coders. Working with a graphic designer, we translated the visual design in to a working site. Coding standards were created, along with site file structure and documentation. On a site this large every effort was made to create processes and systems to make maintenance simpler.
Examples of my work for imandi.com:
Swedish Heart Institute
Swedish Heart Institute needed a new intranet. I designed and built out the foundation for an intranet that can expand to thousands of pages. The requirements of the project were that it be fast to load, light on graphics, and easy to maintain. The design had to be flexible and include space for multiple uses. The client will be maintaining it internally and needed all sections commented. Click to see a screenshot of the basic design.
Pointshare.com
In the spring of 1997 I left USWest and went to work for IntraMed.net. In August of that year the company morphed into MedLynx and then in the following year merged with Health Knowledge to form Pointshare. Among my projects were site designs for all three companies and many external and internal sites. I worked with ColdFusion and ASP developers on a variety of sites and projects. The work was high in volume and constantly changed. The one lesson I learned is that it's ok to work on a project and have it canceled after two months of work. You have to maintain your sense of humor about these things. For an example see the "Checkpoint" page.
Cascade Healthcare
One of the funnest and most challenging project I worked on at Pointshare was the Cascade Healthcare site. I worked on a team with a graphic designer, ColdFusion developer, and the consultant for the client. The goal was to create an easy to navigate, fun and informational site. The end product won a couple awards and was very well received. The site included a doctor search engine, healthcare information search databas and a tips section that was regularly updated. Advanced Biometrics Inc
In 1998, Advanced Biometrics needed a low cost remake of their web site. By reworking the color scheme and using the existing content, I was able to give them a whole new look. In March of 2001 I was hired on as a full time consultant. Navigation was reworked and images were optimized for fast load times.
Diagnostic Ultrasound
During the time that I worked at DXU, I completed one site redesign and produced an internal Document Control site, an Intranet site, and a secure extranet site for posting sales data and training support for the international sales force. The Document Control site had thousands of PDF files available for use by various departments. The site redesign project required many draft designs. Working together with the Sales, Marketing and Support departments we completed a redesign that met all their needs. I created the structure and support elements for an ecommerce site. I was on the selection team that chose an ad agency. Prior to being hired I had worked previously witht he company on a site redesign.
Krafchick Law Office
Steven Krafchick is an attorny who represents injured people. He wanted a simple site that he could maintain. He also wanted a site that would load quickly, and be easy to read. Navigation is simple and is repeated often. This makes the site easy to use. Site design for user maintenance requires compromise. The best example of this type of work can be found in my work for Swedish Heart Institute.
The Plan Store
This consulting project was taken to improve the marketing position of a small company that sells house plans over the Internet. Meta Tags were updated and brought in line with those of primary competitors. Titles and site structure were improved or discussed. The site was resubmitted to 9-12 major search engines and additional placement to many minor ones. Other work I have done of this sort has shown signifucant improvemnt. One of my clients went from no placement to a first page listing for several keywords over a 9 month period.
